Aira - Privacy Policy
Effective date: June 9, 2026 | Last updated: June 9, 2026
Aira is an urban health monitoring app that helps users understand how their local environment affects their personal health. This policy explains what data we collect, why we collect it, and how it is handled. When you first open Aira, a consent screen summarises these practices and lets you choose whether to enable optional cloud backup.
1. Data We Collect
Health profile data
- Name, age, gender
- Height, weight, blood type (used to calculate BMI and calorie estimates)
- Medical conditions (asthma, allergies, diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, arthritis, and flags such as elderly or pregnant)
- Lifestyle information (activity level, diet type, sleep hours, daily water goal, stress level)
- Habits (smoking status, sports activity, outdoor work)
- App preferences (selected language)
This data is stored in a local database on your device. It is not uploaded to the cloud unless you enable cloud backup (see "Account & cloud backup" below).
Health & activity data
- Step counts from your phone's built-in step-counter sensor, used to track daily activity.
- Wearable biometrics via Health Connect (only if you grant permission): heart rate, resting heart rate, steps, and blood oxygen (SpO₂).
- Tracked runs you choose to record: start/end time, duration, distance, average speed, the city, and the GPS route path of that run.
Location data
- Your GPS coordinates are used on-demand to fetch local weather and air quality data for your area.
- Your location path is recorded only while you have an active tracked run in progress.
- Location is not continuously tracked in the background.
Account & cloud backup (optional)
- Aira works fully without an account. If you enable cloud backup, you are signed in either anonymously (no personal details) or with an email address you provide, via Firebase Authentication.
- When cloud backup is enabled, your health profile, daily step totals, and run activities (including run route points) are stored under your account in Google Firebase (Cloud Firestore) so they can be restored across reinstalls or devices.
- If you decline cloud backup on the consent screen, this data stays on your device only.
Community pollution reports
- If you submit a pollution report, its location (latitude/longitude) and pollution type are shared publicly on the community map to help others nearby.
- Community reports are anonymous - they are not published with your name or account identity.
Microphone & audio
- Noise level meter: when you take a noise reading, Aira briefly samples ambient sound through your microphone (about 1.5 seconds) to calculate a decibel (dB) level. The audio is processed on your device in real time and is not recorded, stored, or transmitted - only the resulting dB value is used.
- Voice assistant & voice onboarding: when you speak to Aira, your microphone audio is converted to text using your device's built-in speech-recognition service (typically provided by Google or your device manufacturer), which is governed by that provider's privacy policy. Aira also uses your device's text-to-speech engine to read responses aloud.
- The microphone is used only while you actively start a noise reading or a voice interaction. It is not used in the background.
AI queries
- When you use the Aira voice assistant or AI health tips/route analysis, the recognised text of your question plus a summary of your health profile and current environment is sent to the Google Gemini API to generate a personalised response. No personally identifiable information beyond your health summary is included.
Notifications
- With your permission, Aira sends local notifications about new environmental health alerts. These are generated on your device and are not used for advertising.
2. How We Use Your Data
- To calculate personalised health risk scores for your body zones
- To display real-time environmental health alerts and notifications
- To generate AI-powered health tips and route analysis via the Gemini API
- To score walking, cycling, and driving routes by health safety
- To track your daily steps and tracked runs
- To measure ambient noise levels and provide hearing-safety guidance
- To let you control the app and ask questions by voice
- To back up and restore your data across devices, when you enable cloud backup
- To power the community pollution map
3. Data Sharing
We do not sell or rent your personal health data to anyone. We do not share your personal health data with third parties for advertising.
Data is processed by the following service providers to deliver app features:
- Open-Meteo (open-meteo.com) - receives only geographic coordinates to return weather and air quality data.
- Google Gemini API - receives a health summary prompt; governed by the Google Privacy Policy.
- Google Maps Platform - used for map display and routing; governed by the Google Privacy Policy.
- Google Firebase (Authentication & Cloud Firestore) - stores your account, cloud-backed health data (when enabled), and anonymous community pollution reports; governed by the Google Privacy Policy.
- Health Connect (Android) - on-device source for wearable biometrics you choose to share; governed by the relevant Android/health-data permissions you grant.
- Device speech recognition & text-to-speech - your spoken audio is processed by your device's built-in speech services to convert speech to text (and text to speech); governed by your device/OS provider's privacy policy.
4. Your Choices & Control
- Cloud backup is opt-in. You can decline it at the consent screen and continue using the entire app on-device.
- Microphone, Health Connect, and location permissions are optional and can be granted or revoked at any time in your device settings. The microphone is only accessed when you start a noise reading or a voice interaction.
- You can stop contributing community reports by simply not submitting them.
- You can clear your local data at any time by clearing the app's storage or uninstalling Aira.
5. Data Retention
Your local health profile and activity data are stored on your device until you clear the app's storage or uninstall Aira. If you enabled cloud backup, a copy is retained in your Firebase account; to request deletion of cloud-stored data, contact us using the details below.
6. Children's Privacy
Aira is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect data from children.
7. Security
All network communications use HTTPS. Local data is kept in app-private storage on your device. Cloud-backed data (when you enable it) is stored in your Google Firebase account and protected by Firebase Authentication and Google's infrastructure security.
8. Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy from time to time. Material changes will be reflected by updating the "Last updated" date above.
